Michigan State basketball posts fourth straight flawless April score

The current report contains multi-year rates based on the four years from the 2014-15 academic year through the 2017-18 academic year.

OR football's four-year April score was 968 with a single-year April of 970, down slightly from a multi-year 969 but up from a single-year 958 in 2016-17. Baseball improved by one point to 976 while single-year scores at historically black schools declined slightly.

In the April, each scholarship athlete receives one point per semester for being academically eligible and another point each semester for remaining in school or graduating. A total of 17 programs received ideal scores for the most recent years.

Michigan State is one of just six Division 1 men's basketball programs to post four straight ideal April scores, along with Belmont, Bucknell, Elon, Kentucky and West Virginia.

Women's cross country is one of seven Jayhawk teams that achieved flawless 1,000 single-year April scores, tied for the department best since the NCAA began publishing this statistic in 2004.

"The success we've achieved academically isn't down to just one individual or group of individuals", APSU Director of Athletics Gerald Harrison said.

Programs are not penalized for athletes who opt to pursue a professional career, so long as they are in good academic standing when they are enrolled in classes. The review is expected to continue through 2019.

The football team's score of 975 is well ahead of the national average of 968, while the basketball team's score of 995 is among the sports top 10 percent.

This year, 22 teams face penalties, including eight facing postseason bans.

Fourteen of the 19 teams exceeded its sport's national average, including football and men's basketball.

Low-resource institutions also have made big improvements, with its one-year scoring jumping from 945 in 2010-11 to 969 this year. "I'm very proud of the effort our student-athletes have put forth in the classroom as well as the great work being done by our staff at the Thornton Center".

The Razorbacks' women's basketball team also bounced back from a low single-year score of 909 in last year's report to a 950 single-year score in the latest report. Only two of this year's eight Final Four teams received the award - the Auburn men and the Notre Dame women.
