It was announced Wednesday that Barr would skip Thursday's hearings following a disagreement with the House Judiciary Committee over the questioning he faced. She criticized Barr for the testimony he's previously given to Congress and accused him of lying to Congress - a crime.

The exchange came shortly after House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler threatened to hold Mr Barr in contempt of Congress if he did not provide a full, unredacted copy of Mr Mueller's findings. Nobody is above the law.

"The attorney general of the United States of America was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States", Pelosi said.

Barr released a redacted version of Mueller's 448-page report last month.

Earlier this week, Sanders suggested Nadler resign over the very reason Barr refused to show up: The chairman wanted committee staff attorneys to question the attorney general.

So he was a no-show at the House Judiciary Committee hearing on Thursday.

"The Mueller report strongly stated that there was No Collusion with Russian Federation", he tweeted.

The Senate testimony was the latest episode in a turnabout in public perception for Barr, whose selection was greeted by some with high hopes that he would return the Justice Department to stability following two years of leadership upheaval.

"We will make sure that no president becomes a monarch", he said.

She said no one should be surprised by what Barr is experiencing, as Democrats refuse to admit they were wrong with their allegations of Trump-Russia collusion. Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein subsequently concluded that Trump did not break the law. It did not establish the Trump campaign conspired with Russian operatives. Barr said Wednesday his goal had been simply to release the report's bottom-line conclusions as he readied the entire document for release.

"The Committee is willing to prioritize a specific, defined set of underlying investigative and evidentiary materials for immediate production", the chairman wrote. The president "is blocking us from interviewing White House personnel, executive people in his administration".

Democrats were anything but persuaded.

"President Trump says, "I won't let him testify" - it's not for President Trump to decide whether he will let a witness testify, now a private citizen, before a house of Congress", he said. Trump, in response to that moment, said Harris' attitude was "probably very nasty".
