Regardless of his centre-back partner, the Reds have looked more assured and organised since Van Dijk's arrival in January past year, while the defensive record has improved immeasurably too.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been crowned as the PFA Players' Player of the Year.

Van Dijk is a finalist for the award, and Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane, Manchester City's Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero and Chelsea's Eden Hazard are his rivals for the PFA prize.

His influence in the back four has seen Liverpool concede just 20 goals in 35 Premier League matches so far this season while losing just one game.

Van Dijk said he voted for Sterling - who has scored 17 Premier League goals and tallied nine assists for reigning champions City this season.

According to the Daily Mail that is due to happen with Van Dijk set to be named the PFA Player's Player of the Year on Thursday, beating City's Raheem Sterling.

He will take as reigning Players' Player of the Year from team-mate Mohamed Salah, who won it last term after an unstoppable debut campaign in red.

Van Dijk didn't have the disadvantage of playing in the World Cup, which is exhausting and very hard the following season.

The Senegalese forward stars as the only African in the shortlist alongside three other Liverpool players - Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Unsurprisingly, the six-man shortlist for the award was filled with players from the two clubs chasing the 2018-19 Premier League title. It's not too shocking to hear that Lineker, a former striker, has gone for the attacking player this year.
