While a watch means tornadoes are possible in an area, warnings indicate twisters have been observed, the National Weather Service says.

Rains flooded neighborhoods in the state as strong winds uprooted trees and left branches scattered across major roads.

Damage was heavy in the MS hamlet of Learned, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Jackson.

"Severe thunderstorms with considerable potential for producing damaging wind gusts and a few tornadoes are expected across much of the southern through mid-Atlantic Coast region, particularly across the Carolinas into southern Virginia late this afternoon and evening", the National Weather Service said Friday.
