To understand exactly wtf is going on you have to rewind a couple weeks. Back in December, Lil Nas X shared a video of himself listening to "Old Town Road" and wrote, "twitter please help me get billy ray cyrus on this".

The country music legend said "only outlaws are outlawed" and passed on advice to the 19-year-old rapper to "take this as a compliment". The song reached No. 19 on the Billboard Hot Country chart for the week of March 16, but it was removed because it didn't embrace enough elements of country music.

On Friday, rapper Lil Nas X released a remix of his viral trap country song "Old Town Road" featuring pensive cowboy Billy Ray Cyrus. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition.

A Billboard spokesperson later stated that the "decision to take the song off of the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist".

But when Magats dropped the charges, he said the Chicago Police Department "did a phenomenal job" in the investigation. After questioning the men, police later said the actor had paid them to stage the attack as a way to gain publicity.

As you might expect, fans had their suspicions about what exactly it was about the song that was a problem...

In a Time Magazine interview about the controversy, Lil Nas X described the song as "country trap" and said it should be eligible for inclusion on both R&B and country music charts. A hero with a mullet.

The song is now rocketing up the charts - whether Billboard wants it or not.

When news of Lil Nas X's exclusion from the country music chart surfaced, Billy Ray Cyrus tweeted his support for the young artist.
