On Thursday, Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) finally announced that he is entering the 2020 presidential race, ending months of speculation.

O'Rourke ran for a Senate seat representing the state of Texas in 2018, losing by less than three percentage points to Sen.

"This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us", O'Rourke said seated alongside his wife Amy. We are truly now, more than ever, the last great hope of Earth.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke on Thursday called for ending the "federal prohibition on marijuana" because of the way United States drug laws disproportionately put minorities in prison.

The trip will serve as the first test of whether O'Rourke can carry to the national political stage the pop-star appeal he showed in Texas previous year, drawing enthusiastic crowds and $80 million in campaign donations.

Robert "Beto" O'Rourke announced he is running for president early Thursday morning.

His initial challenge in the Democratic presidential race will be to distinguish himself from candidates sharing his positions on key progressive issues, such as universal health care and refusing donations from corporate political action committees.

Some had encouraged O'Rourke to make another run at the Senate again, challenging Republican Sen.

The White House run will also prompt greater scrutiny of his policy proposals and track record in Congress.

"I think he has got a lot of hand movement, I've never seen so much hand movement", Mr. Trump told reporters.

"But unlike Trump, O'Rourke can appear nearly too innocent to be a politician-too decent, too wholesome, the very reason he became popular also the same reason he could be crucified on the national stage".

Starting with the Iowa caucuses next year, the Democrat who amasses the majority of delegates nationwide in a series of nominating contests will be nominated at the party's convention in the summer, and will likely face Trump in November's general election.
