Speaking to the media he said that there will be approximately 10 lakh polling stations in this Lok Sabha Elections as compared to 9 lakh polling stations in 2014.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced dates for Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. The elections to the world's largest democracy will be held for 543 seats on almost 10 lakh polling booths across the country, with around 90 crore voters ready to exercise the franchise.

Since the last phase of polling will take place only on May 19, there is no scope for announcing even the exit poll results.

The polling dates over the seven phases are April 11, April 18, April 23, May 6, May 12, and May 19.

With the announcement of polls, the Model Code of Conduct will come into effect from this evening bringing political advertising, campaigning and general conduct of political parties and leaders under the EC's scrutiny.

"The Election Commission has attempted a very comprehensive preparation for the conduct of the election", he said.

Elections to state assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha will be held simultaneously with the elections to the Lok Sabha, said the CEC, adding that a separate notification will be issued on assembly polls.

Since the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has been dissolved, the EC is bound to hold fresh polls there as well within a six-month period, which will end in May.

The party has fielded Atishi (East Delhi), Dilip Pandey (North East Delhi), Raghav Chadha (South Delhi), Gugan Singh (North West Delhi) and Pankaj Gupta (Chandni Chowk) for the Lok Sabha election. However, there is no clarity yet on whether elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held along with the General election. While 14 seats will go to the polls in phase 2 on April 18, the rest 14 will vote in phase 3 on April 23.

The Election Commission has appointed three Poll Observers including Noor Mohammad, A S Gill and Vinod Zutshi. March 28 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
