Pelosi has referred to climate change as her "flagship" issue.

"Until they can prove that they are honoring human rights, until they can make a good-faith effort to expand and embrace immigrants, the immigrants in this nation that have always been a part, and have always been a core element of American democracy, until they can prove good faith to an American ideal they do not deserve any resources for their radical agenda", Ocasio-Cortez added.

Greg Carlock, a climate researcher with Data for Progress who helped author the Green New Deal, said lawmakers who seek middle ground policies on global warming risk losing youth support in future elections. She said Pelosi asked her to serve on the committee, but she declined because it focuses on investigations. "And so that's really what we're trying to accomplish with the Green New Deal".

The resolution being introduced Thursday marks the first time Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers have attached legislative language to the Green New Deal, a concept that until now has been largely undefined other than as a call for urgent action to head off catastrophic climate change and create jobs. "I do know its enthusiastic and I welcome all the enthusiasm that is out there", she told reporters during her weekly press conference.

The Green New Deal would be paid for 'the same way we paid for the original New Deal, World War II, the bank bailouts, tax cuts for the rich and decades of war - with public money appropriated by Congress, ' Ocasio-Cortez said.

Ocasio-Cortez said she will immediately begin to work on legislation that would "fully flesh out the projects involved in the Green New Deal".

The Green New Deal is an outline of objectives to transition the U.S.to 100 percent renewable energy in roughly 10 years.

Ocasio-Cortez teamed up with veteran Sen.

It envisions a 10-year mobilization that would upgrade and expand power sources and power grids to meet 100 percent of power demand via clean energy sources, as well as overhauling transport systems to "eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector as much as is technologically feasible".

Most of the Democratic presidential candidates, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand of New York; Kamala Harris of California; Elizabeth Warren of MA; and Cory Booker of New Jersey have also broadly endorsed the idea behind the Green New Deal.

It is already playing a role on the 2020 presidential campaign trail, with progressive Democratic hopefuls including Senators Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren expressing support.
