Happy Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil says a lovely spring it will be

If not, expect an early spring.

Perhaps getting a little too ahead of himself, another member of Phil's Inner Circle held up a sign reading, "Get out your swimsuits".

For just the 19th time in 133 years, Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day morning.

Phil's prediction - which came just days after plummeting temperatures across the country claimed at least 21 lives - should be taken with a grain of salt. The groundhog did not see his shadow this morning in Pennsylvania. Using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Punxsutawney Phil is only 3% accurate in predicting his local weather trends.

According to the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, as many as 30,000 people descend on the tiny town annually to watch Phil make his prediction.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights , at least 12 Iranians and four Syrian soldiers were killed. There were no casualties but Israeli army officials said if it had landed it could have killed dozens of people.

Rose applauded Staten Islanders for supporting the U.S. Coast Guard, FBI and TSA - three of several federal agencies impacted during the 35-day ordeal - and added the government "failed you with this shutdown".

And of course, there's always the Bill Murray classic move "Groundhog Day" if you need a refresher course. When German settlers arrived in the United States, they brought the tradition with them, swapping hedgehogs for groundhogs.

Punxsutawney Groundhog Club records date back to 1887. It was then that a newspaper editor who happened to be a part of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club declared that Punxsutawney Phil was America's only true weather-forecasting groundhog.

Since the entire holiday hinges on a pudgy rodent's weather predictions, it's natural to question how often Punxsutawney Phil is actually correct. "All hail groundhog supremacy", the Inner Circle president said, as Phil was presented to the crowd.
