U.S. praises Israel for backing ‘forces of freedom & democracy’ in Venezuela

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told CNN's Jake Tapper on Sunday that he would oppose American military intervention in Venezuela... even as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro insists that a coup effort by opposition leader Juan Guaidó was orchestrated by the United States.

Mr Maduro said the display showed the world he had the backing of the military and that Venezuela's armed forces were ready to defend the country.

"The Maduro regime relinquished any remaining legitimacy when it seized power through fraudulent elections", Freeland said, renewing calls for him to "cede power to the National Assembly, the only remaining democratically-elected institution in Venezuela in line with that country's constitution".

These protests are being led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Noam Chomsky and other notable cheerleaders of former Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, who brought socialism to the country two decades ago. Greece's left-wing ruling Syriza party, however, voiced full support for Maduro.

Guaido asked the crowd.

But France and Britain joined Spain and Germany in turning up the pressure on Maduro, saying they would recognise Guaido as president unless Venezuela calls a new presidential election within eight days.

"The people of Venezuela believe in each one of you", Silva said, handing them the leaflets.

The country's foreign ministry issued a statement saying that far-left President Nicolas Maduro was suspending the expulsion of USA diplomats, to allow for a 30-day window to negotiate with American officials.

Pope Francis, winding up a trip to Panama, said on Sunday he was praying that "a just and peaceful solution is reached to overcome the crisis, respecting human rights".

Oil prices fell on Monday after USA energy firms added rigs for the first time this year in a sign that crude production there may rise further, and as China, the world's second-largest oil user, reported additional signs of an economic slowdown.

Some 29 people have been killed and more than 350 people have been detained in clashes this week between anti-Maduro activists and security forces.

In response to a question if there was any progress in contacts with Venezuela and if the possibility of providing military and financial aid to President Nicolas Maduro was under consideration, the Kremlin spokesman noted that no such talks were underway.

"We have no plans to close the embassy", a State Department official said Sunday. With Venezuelan allies China and Russian Federation holding veto power, there was little chance the United Nations body would agree to take action.

'We're not considering anything, but all options are on the table, ' Trump said.
