Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

"The explosion took place near a security branch in the south of the city".

Israel typically refrains from commenting on individual airstrikes in Syria, but does generally acknowledge that it carries out raids against Iranian- and Hezbollah-linked targets in the country.

The official Syrian news agency SANA reported earlier on Sunday cited a military source that reported the Syrian air defenses had confronted an Israeli aerial attack targeted at the country's southern region and "prevented it from achieving any of its objectives".

The IDF gave no further details in its statement.

But the incident happened after Syrian media and the Russia's Ministry of Defence said they had "prevented" an Israeli airstrike near Damascus Airport.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed last week in a rare admission that the Israel Air Force struck Iranian targets in Syria last weekend, following Syrian reports of successful interceptions over Damascus.

"This policy doesn't change, whether I am in Israel or on a historic visit in Chad". Syria is therefore on high alert for any potential airstrikes.

Israel rarely publicly confirms its strikes in Syria.

Syrian state television earlier reported that a blast had been heard around the southern highway in Damascus.
