One of the most immediate challenges confronting Pelosi as leader of the new House Democratic majority will be the fight over the President's long-promised border wall that triggered a standoff between congressional Democrats and the President and resulted in a partial government shutdown, which is now in its second week.

Friday's White House meeting with Trump included eight congressional leaders - the top two Democrats and Republicans of both chambers.

"We're not doing the wall", Pelosi told reporters Thursday night. Does anybody have any doubt?

"We won't be opening until it's solved", Trump said. Yeah, one dollar. The fact is a wall is an immorality.

Pelosi also took a shot a Trump, calling his proposal "a wall between reality and his constituents".

The Democratic package to end the shutdown includes a bill to temporarily fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels - with $1.3 billion for border security, far less than Trump has said he wants- through February 8 as bipartisan talks would continue.

Progressives will be eager to push back with greater effect against an administration they believe has overstepped its authority and abused power in the almost two years since Trump's inauguration.

Some Republican senators have spoken out in favour of approving the funding bills, in order to end the government shutdown. "Our new Democratic majority was elected to end the chaos and govern responsibly".

The Homeland Security bill does not include Trump's border wall demands.

'On an nearly daily basis, he attacks our Constitution, our democracy, the rule of law and the people who are in this country. "And I said baby, they don't because we're gonna go in there and impeach the motherf--er".

She reiterated that they will bring up legislation Thursday to reopen parts of the government and pledged to have a House that's "transparent, bipartisan and unifying".

"The Administration has made it clear that the Government needs an investment of at least $5 billion for border security, along with the flexibility necessary to utilize these funds efficiently", a statement of administration policy stated.

Trump, whose own bid for 2020 already is underway, faces potential challenges from the ranks of Senate Democrats under Chuck Schumer. We won the Senate, they won the House. "Let's not waste the time", McConnell said.

Mr Trump has said he will reject any measure that does not provide funding for his proposed US-Mexico border wall.

"He doesn't own the shutdown any longer". It would be possible for Pelosi to win with fewer votes, as several previous House speakers have, if some members vote present or decline to participate.

McConnell on Thursday restated the stance he has adopted since the Senate unanimously passed a short-term spending bill last month without additional wall funding - only to watch as Trump turned against it the very next morning amid a conservative backlash. The press corps scrambled to fill the room, and about 10 minutes after making the announcement, Sanders entered and introduced President Trump, who stepped behind the podium for the first time since taking office. The bill, which would provide money through the end of the fiscal year September 30, was approved, 241-190, with several House Republicans joining Democrats. The second bill would fund DHS through February 8 at the current funding rate of $1.3 billion for border security.
