The Falcon rocket used for Wednesday's launch was not used in any prior mission.

SpaceX followed the Spaceflight mission with a December 5 resupply to the International Space Station, which marked the company's 20th launch in 2018. Through this cargo, Species was sending supplies science experiments and food to astronauts living at the International Space Station.

The launch marked the fourth flight of the Hawthorne-based aerospace firm's $62 million reusable Falcon 9 first-stage rocket booster, which reportedly failed to land properly because of hydraulics issues.

"The important point here is we have a safety function on board that makes sure the vehicle does not go on land until everything is OK, and that worked perfectly", SpaceX vice president Hans Koenisgman said.

As of Thursday night, there was no word from SpaceX or Port Canaveral as to when the rocket booster will be towed in from sea.
