-Oct. 6: The Post, citing anonymous Turkish officials, reports Khashoggi may have been killed in the consulate in a "preplanned murder" by a Saudi team.

"This was an operation that was a rogue operation", the official, Adel al-Jubeir, told Fox News on Sunday.

For weeks Saudi Arabia denied knowledge of what happened to him, initially claiming Khashoggi had left the building.

Newly leaked surveillance footage from the killing of Jamal Khashoggi appears to show a man walking around in the writer's clothes in Istanbul after his killing.

He has remained largely silent on the case, although Turkey's pro-government newspapers have released information detailing a 15-member team that purportedly arrived in Istanbul to confront Khashoggi at the consulate.

Early Saturday, Oct. 21, the Saudi government acknowledged for the first time that Khashoggi was dead. What's the latest from the Saudis? "And we are determined to punish those who are responsible for this murder", he said. "They made the mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi in the consulate and they tried to cover up for it".

Meanwhile, Saudi state media reported that both Prince Mohammed and King Salman made calls to Khashoggi's son, Salah, early Monday. "These things unfortunately happen", al-Jubeir said.

At last 18 people have been detained and several officials have been fired in relation to Khashoggi's killing.

Khashoggi - a United States resident, The Washington Post columnist, and a leading critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain documents for his pending marriage, but he never left the mission.

What has been the global reaction? "But I want to get to the answer", U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters this weekend, when asked about the Saudi investigation and Riyadh's subsequent firing of Saudi officials over the incident. "For 50 years we can not live with a crown prince who is an enemy of Turkey", said Selvi.

Forty-five years ago, Saudi Arabia joined other OPEC nations in an oil embargo over the 1973 Mideast war in retaliation for American military support for Israel.

He added that pressure should be applied to force the Saudi leader to put an end to the Yemen war, which has been heavily criticised for human rights abuses, including high civilian casualties.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that details of Khashoggi's killing will be revealed in a speech that Erdogan will give in parliament on Tuesday.

Where is the investigation now?

Police have searched the nearby Belgrad forest in Istanbul where they believe the body may have been taken and one official was hopeful its fate would be known "before long".

"If Saudi state involvement is indeed proven, the global community must stand firm in its stated resolve to insist on the highest level of investigation and punishment for those responsible - both for the perpetrators of this horrendous crime and the masterminds who ordered it". His body was then rolled in a rug and given to a local "co-operator" to dispose of.

CNN has obtained exclusive law enforcement surveillance footage, part of the Turkish government's investigation, that appears to show the man leaving the Saudi consulate by the back door, wearing Khashoggi's clothes, a fake beard, and glasses.
