Khashoggi, a U.S. resident, Washington Post columnist and leading critic of the powerful Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, vanished after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago to get marriage documents.

Jamal Khashoggi, who frequently wrote articles critical of the Saudi government, has been missing ever since he entered Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey last week.

He spoke by phone a day earlier with King Salman, and he said both deny any knowledge of what happened to Khashoggi.

Sanders said the resolution, when Congress returns from recess next month, would "give the Senate another opportunity to end USA support for this catastrophe, to reassert congressional authority over matters of war, and to show the Saudi government that they do not have a blank check from the United States to continue human rights violations".

"Canada has raised the issue directly with Saudi Arabia and we are talking about the issue with our allies".

Concern over Khashoggi's disappearance has seen media organizations and a growing number of guests pull out of a "Davos in the Desert" investment conference set for October 23-25, which has become the biggest show for investors to promote Prince Mohammed's reform vision.

The Saudi heir apparent wields considerable power in the kingdom and is being held responsible by many outside for whatever happened to Mr Khashoggi.

Barnett said he tried to ask Kushner about Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman after they landed in NY. "Saudi Arabia, I get along with all of them", Trump said.

"This guy has got to go", Senator Lindsey Graham told Fox.

Mr. Trump has resisted any action, pointing to huge United States weapons deals pending with Saudi Arabia and saying that sanctions could end up hurting the American economy. "We're going to try getting to the bottom of it very soon, but his was a flat denial".

An audio recording has emerged of the alleged torture and murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to Sky sources.

Pompeo was in Saudi Arabia for meetings with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

What is the state of investigation?

Turkish investigators were expected to carry out a search of the Saudi Consul General's residence in Istanbul later on Tuesday.

Mohammed al-Otaibi, the Saudi consul general, apparently left on a 2pm flight as security forces set up barricades outside his residence in the city.

Trump offered his most robust defence of the Saudi regime during a Tuesday interview with the Associated Press in which he linked the allegations of the Khashoggi case with the recent Brett Kavanaugh affair.

The high-level Turkish official told the AP that police found "certain evidence" of Khashoggi's slaying at the consulate, without elaborating.

Turkish sources allege that Khashoggi was lured into the consulate and murdered, then dismembered.
