Russia to provide Syria with new S-300 air defence missiles

The decision to supply the S-300 technology was taken by President Putin because of the downing of the Russian aircraft, the defence minister said.

"It is capable of intercepting air assault weapons at a distance of more than 250 kilometers and hit simultaneously several air targets", the minister said.

Moscow has laid the blame squarely on the shoulders of Israel, saying the Israeli jets were intentionally flying close to the Russian plane, leading to the case of mistaken identity and the deadly shootdown that killed 15 Russian troops.

"For Israel, it may have to balance more carefully the desire to limit the production of advanced missiles and prevent their transfer, with essentially direct confrontation with Syria", said Ofer Zalzberg, a Jerusalem-based analyst with International Crisis Group.

Bolton said a political process was needed to end Syria's war but that Russia's plans with the S-300 made that hard.

"We will continue to take action to prevent the establishment of an Iranian military presence in Syria and we will continue the security coordination between the IDF and the Russian military", the Israeli Prime Minister said.

Shoigu said Russian Federation will also jam military aircraft communications in the airspace next to Syria over the Mediterranean Sea, while upgrading Syria's air-defense command systems.

The Il-20 surveillance plane was shot down on September 17 when it was preparing to land at the Russian Hmeymim air base at a time when four Israeli jets were conducting an air strike in the vicinity.

Offensive Struggles Plague Cowboys In 24-13 Loss To Seahawks
The fact that the Seahawks are facing the Cowboys is certainly part of what makes this interesting. Asked if there was a chance Thomas would miss Week 3, Carroll said: "We'll see how he's doing".

Nevertheless, Netanyahu said that ultimately, Israel will continue to defend itself from Iranian escalation in the region, albeit preferably with Russian cooperation.

Russian Federation said Monday that it would equip Syria with sophisticated air defense systems, a move that could worsen a rift with Israel by limiting its ability to bomb across its northern border. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to discuss the issue with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during this week's U.N. General Assembly in NY.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis pointed this out hours after Bolton's remarks, claiming that while Russian Federation and Iran had both contributed to instability in Syria the U.S. military remained exclusively focused on defeating Daesh.

Russia is to send new anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, a week after Syrian forces accidentally shot down a Russian aircraft during an Israeli air strike.

Russian Federation in April had hinted that it would supply the S-300 to Assad's government despite Israeli objections. "Most importantly, this will guarantee that Russian aircraft are identified by Syrian air defences", he said. Neither of those two players could hope to overcome Israel's military superiority in the area, but for the Israeli government it is the impunity that matters as much as the ability to launch strikes. It also says US forces will not leave Syria until Iran leaves.

Idlib is an inseparable part of Syria and it is natural for the government to retake control of the city and stabilize its sovereignty over there, he added.

The downing of the plane came just hours after Russia announced it had reached a deal with Turkey to avert a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive against the northwestern province of Idlib, controlled by a mix of radical groups and Turkey-backed armed opposition.
