Mauricio Pochettino says Spurs' painful defending not worthy of title contenders

The setback comes on the back of a 3-0 win at Manchester United, after which Spurs boss Pochettino had seemingly urged against complacency by downplaying the performance.

Chelsea made it four wins from four games to start the new season as Hazard scored in a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, and sit level at the top of the table with Liverpool and Watford.

"It is so painful to concede two goals like this", Pochettino said. The Hornets have started superbly and will no doubt make a real game of this but I think Tottenham will have just too much for them.

It remains to be seen how long Javi Gracia's third-placed side can remain among the upper echelon, but this win confirmed they are now there on merit. The surprising hosts have gotten off to a hot start on the season, conceding just two goals in three matches, just as the Spurs have done.

The Premier League will return following the worldwide break on September 15.

"I am not really interested in records but I am happy for the boys, for the team and for the whole club that we won today".

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini has compared midfielder Jack Wilshere to Andrea Pirlo , saying the two players have the same traits.

"I want to apologise once again and thank you all for your support".

And speaking after the game, Pochettino said Tottenham would not challenge for the Premier League title this season if they continued to defend in such a way. "Because he has warned them and some of them have not heeded the warning, I can't remember him being that annoyed [as he was in his post-match interview]".

"It is disappointing because in the second half we scored, but then be more aggressive, be more strong in the situation [where Watford scored], because in every single game, you are going to find this sort of situation", he said.

Chairman Daniel Levy said: "We are all focused on ensuring contractors deliver our new stadium in the shortest possible period of time and opening our stadium at the earliest opportunity".

"We are facing many issues, but although disappointing, costly and frustrating, I am uncompromising in my determination to deliver something extraordinary to our fans". The reality is we need to analyse who is on the pitch. We showed that against Newcastle and Fulham and at Old Trafford. "Of course, myself first, I am responsible - the guilty one when the team loses".
