A French judicial official says rape and sexual assault accusations against actor Gerard Depardieu are the subject of a preliminary investigation. "Gerard Depardieu is shaken by this complaint ... and is absolutely contesting any assault, rape, or any criminal act", Témime said.

The alleged crimes occurred this month in one of Mr Depardieu's Paris residences, French media report. Gerard Depardieu's accuser is a 22-year-old woman whose name is still being kept a secret for her protection.

The unnamed actress is accusing Depardieu of having assaulted and raped her at his Paris home on two occasions, on August 6 and August 13. The case was then taken to prosecutors in Paris. "He will cooperate in the investigation and will answer questions", Herve Temime told BFM television. The two met when Depardieu led a master class at her school, BFM TV reported.

Besson's lawyer called the second allegation "fantasist accusations" and said the director denied any "inappropriate or reprehensible behavior". "But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack", the letter continued, CBS News reports.

Mr Depardieu is one of France's most recognisable actors, and has starred in films such as Cyrano de Bergerac and Jean de Florette. Not only that, but Russian President Vladimir Putin invited him to dinner where he personally presented the actor with his Russian citizenship.
