'She gave me hope': Jully Black on how Aretha Franklin inspired generations

Paul McCartney said: "Let's all take a moment to give thanks for the lovely life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family", a family statement read. "The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds".

"Thank you Aretha Franklin for getting me through tough days", Twitter user, Pablo, said. "As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this hard time".

Her final performance was at an Elton John AIDS Foundation gala in New York City in November 2017.

The performer, who became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was diagnosed with the illness in 2010. She, too, shared a picture she had taken with Franklin herself.

She sang at Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009, and the former president - who was brought to tears by another of her performances in Washington in 2015 - was quick to issue a powerful tribute with his wife.

Asked about Nicki Minaj, she said, "I'm gonna pass on that one".

Dondre Johnson said he had to be there with others, meeting on the steps of the old Tarrant County Courthouse, to pay homage to the melodious voice of the great Aretha Franklin.

Franklin released her first album, "Songs of Faith", in 1956, scoring regional hits with two gospel songs and occasionally touring with The Soul Stirrers, whose star was Sam Cooke.

Her extensive music catalogue also made Franklin's songs frequent candidates for covers.

In 2005, Franklin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom - the highest award for an American civilian - by then-president George W. Bush.

"I've listened to her throughout the years", Johnson said. A year or so later, he and Franklin were both in Detroit and Butler had her on his radio show, beginning a relationship that lasted the rest of the Queen of Soul's life.
