Israel has blocked all fuel and gas transfers through the Kerem Shalom crossing with the Gaza Strip, Israel's defense ministry said Tuesday.

The all-clear for Gaza border communities came on Sunday despite a spattering of pre-dawn rocket fire, hours after a ceasefire between Israel and militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad was due to come into effect, ending the most intense conflagration between the groups since the 2014 war, known as Operation Protective Edge.

Israel carried out air strikes partially in response to the months of fires started by the kite firebombs, but also over continuing protests and clashes along the Gaza border.

Smoke rises from Israeli agricultural fields near the Gaza Strip border, after being set on fire by a molotov cocktail kite flown over by Palestinians as they protest by the border fence on May 14, 2018.

"Closing Gaza's major crossing for movement of goods, the main lifeline for nearly two million people, half of whom are children, constitutes an illegal and immoral act of collective punishment", they said.

Hamas will face a "wall of steel" if it keeps up its aggression against Israel, Netanyahu warned, adding however that the threat won't disappear overnight.

Israel hit dozens of sites it said belonged to militants in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing two Palestinian teenagers.

All 13 were brought to safety in a perilous rescue organised by Thai Navy SEALs and an worldwide team of cave-diving experts. Some of the specialists have expressed shock that Saman, 38, was the only person killed in the perilous venture.

The move was in response to a violation of the ceasefire by the Palestinian terror groups operating in Gaza when they fired a rocket toward southern Israel.

Kanou called on the worldwide community to "break its silence towards Israeli crimes against humanity".

"The focus of the attack is a wide-scale strike of the Hamas Battalion HQ in Beit Lahia, which includes urban warfare training facilities, weapon storage warehouse, training compounds, command centers, offices, and more", the IDF said in a statement.

Another Hamas spokesman, Hazem Qassem, also denounced the decision as a "crime", saying it was in violation of all global laws and conventions.

"The Israeli occupation would be playing with fire if its warplanes targeted kite flyers", he said.

Egypt has also maintained the blockade with Israel over the strip, in an attempt to weaken Hamas.

More than 130 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the protests.

The arson attacks began during mass demonstrations along the border, at which thousands of Palestinians have expressed their support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel and also demanded an end to the blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel and Egypt.
