White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to news of the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, which killed five and injured several others.

People could be seen leaving the building with their hands up, as police urged them to depart through a parking lot and officers converged.

"We've had a bad shooting incident this afternoon", said Anne Arundel County Executive Steven Schuh, at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

The four other victims worked at the Gazette as well: Rebecca Smith, sales assistant; Wendi Winters, an editor; Gerald Fischman, editorial page editor; and writer and editor John McNamara. "There's nothing to keep this from happening to any newsroom or newspaper across the country".

Police recovered something they thought might have been an explosive device.

Prior to naming him, authorities said the gunman entered the building in a targeted attack and "looked for his victims".

More than 170 people were in the building at the time of the shooting.
