XXXTentacion, the troubled 20-year-old rapper whose grim, often suicidal rhymes propelled him to the top of the U.S. chart just months ago, was shot dead Monday in Florida in a possible robbery, authorities said. Word first broke with a TMZ report.

Rapper XXXTentacion was shot and killed during an apparent robbery Monday in Broward County, Florida, police said.

"His second album, "?", was released on March 16, 2018 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Investigators are yet to ascertain the motive behind the killing.

"I used to beat kids at school just to get her to talk to me, yell at me", he said.

Friends and collaborators such as Ski Mask The Slump God and Diplo expressed their disbelief and heartbreak on Twitter.

Often described as one of rap's most controversial artists, XXXTentacion, whose real name is Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, rocketed to fame after his song "Look at Me" went viral on social media and SoundCloud in 2016.

Soorma is scheduled to release on July 13th of this year whereas Dhadak will roll out a week after on July 20th. The two young actors are all set to appear together in Karan Johar's Dhadhak , directed by Shashank Khaitan .

But the teenager's career was already being overshadowed by his legal problems, including charges of aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic battery by strangulation and, later, witness tampering.

Among those to pay tribute following his tragic death was Kanye West, who wrote on Twitter, alongside a picture of the rapper: "Rest in peace".

Clarification: Earlier versions of this story did not include that his house arrest status was lifted in March.

His music was recently at the center of controversy, when Spotify removed it from all official playlists as part of a new "anti-hate" policy, then backtracked after swift criticism over the policy's implementation.
