He was 35 years old and had seven years of service. She initially was in critical condition following the shooting, but was pronounced dead during the overnight hours Friday into Saturday.

Police say they are not looking for any other suspects.

An inmate overpowered two sheriff's deputies while being transported to a Kansas City courthouse on Friday, resulting in a shooting that killed one deputy and critically wounded the other, authorities said. This happened in a transport bay, sources say the inmate got a hold of a deputy's firearm.

The wounded deputy and the suspect were undergoing surgeries Friday afternoon.

Additional information was not released. A van with prisoners left the Wyandotte County Jail entry, on the left, and went into a gated parking lot area on the right of the photo, where the shooting occurred.

Few details have been released about the shootings, including the victims' names.

The Rev. Vernon Howard, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City, said he has many questions and isn't confident they will be answered by a police department investigation.

Colón earlier said he was "very confident (the shooting) was a last-resort situation to ensure the safety of the public".

Gov Jeff Colyer was briefed on the incident as he arrived to a congressional forum hosted by the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. He offered a moment of silence for the deputies after he finished his speech at the event. He noted that the county and the city have dealt with other officer shootings in the recent past.

Part of what makes the shooting so shocking is that it happened in what would normally be a safe, secure location for police.

Kansas City, Kansas, police confirm the deputies were shot at the courthouse in downtown Kansas City, Kansas.

This is a breaking news update.

Lt. Kelli Bailiff with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said the deputies were transporting inmates to court for a hearing when they were "overcome".

Both officers were with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is heading the investigation and hopes surveillance video will help with that.
