Payments across Britain hit as Visa faces 'disruption' in Europe

Meanwhile, a handful of businesses and financial institutions are reporting problems processing Visa payments.

Marks & Spencer said: "We are unable to accept Visa card payments now".

Messages telling customers of the "disruption to service" have been sent out.

Companies that facilitate card payments have reported that merchants are struggling to take card payments.

"This incident is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe being processed," the statement said.

Payment network Visa has confirmed that it has been disrupted by a service outage. Right now, it seems like these problems are localized to the UK, Ireland and parts of Europe.

"This is an industry wide issue which is being investigated as a matter of urgency and we apologise for any inconvenience. We will provide an update once we have one from our partners".

Meanwhile, some companies are resorting to retro imprint and signature machines in order for customers to still use their cards.
