Shopian encounter: 4 terrorists gunned down in Badigam area

Five terrorists were reportedly killed during an encounter that broke out against the security forces, on Sunday, in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.

"We have contacted his family after coming to know that Rafi Ahmad has been trapped along with other militants at Badigam area of Shopian", a police officer told GNS.

Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, S P Pani said the police made repeated attempts to persuade the professor to surrender, but to no avail.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding terrists fired upon the forces, which was retaliated.

Earlier on Saturday, the security forces gunned down Showkat Ahmed Tak, a category A++ terrorist, in an encounter in Chatabal area of Srinagar. "Their identification process is on", J&K police Chief SP Vaid said.

During the encounter 5 militants of outlawed Hizb-ul-Mujahideen were killed.

Muhammad Rafi Bhat, an assistant professor in the sociology department of Kashmir University went missing on Friday afternoon. Now, the police has called the family of the professor, a resident of Chunduna in Ganderbal to persuade him to surrender. One of the protesters, a teenage boy has sustained critical wounds and has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar.

However, a police spokesman said Mir was injured in the cross-firing during the encounter.

Meanwhile, clashes erupted between demonstrators and security forces in the areas adjacent to sealed area while authorities suspended internet and rail service.
