U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday hinted at the possibility of the release of three U.S. detainees in North Korea.

America's top diplomat Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also reportedly brought up the plight of the Christians when he secretly met with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un over the Easter weekend.

The result is that this third generation, now moving into the ranks of power in North Korea, has a greater understanding and interaction with the West compared to their parents, who came of age at the height of the Cold War.

A quarter century of mistrust and violated agreements would seem to offer little room for optimism ahead of an upcoming summit between the leaders of the US and North Korea. North Korea's drive for deliverable nuclear weapons has always been tied to a desire to ensure regime security.

The Panmunjom truce village in the demilitarised zone between North and South, where last week's inter-Korean summit was convened, has emerged as a possible venue for the Kim-Trump meeting.

The Blue House - President Moon's office - has warned the adviser "not to cause any more confusion", with such comments, spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom said.

The Chinese diplomat is expected to be briefed on the talks between Moon and Kim. If he was willing to pull the U.S. Forces Korea out over such a small matter, he could very well put that option on the table when he meets with Kim for the sake of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The Daily NK quoted a source in Ryanggang Province as saying that a neighbour has been given renewed hope of seeing her younger sister, who was sent to prison 18 years ago.

China says sanctions are meant to further diplomacy rather than punish the North and opposes any measures that could topple the regime, possibly bringing a tide of refugees across its border and leading to the stationing of USA and South Korea troops in the North.

"The main thing, we want to get peace", Trump said. Choi told the Agence-France Presse (AFP) that a contact within North Korea told him that the prisoners "are staying in a hotel on the outskirts of Pyongyang".

President Moon Jae-in said Wednesday the issue of USA military forces stationed in South Korea had nothing to do with the signing of a peace treaty that would formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, in a rare public rebuke of his special adviser on inter-Korean policy, Moon Chung-in.

Kim Jong Un would be made fully aware, according to this argument, that he would accept nothing short of complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.

Mr Trump saw the images of the meeting between Kim and Moon and liked how it was televised, CNN reported.
