Uber acquires bike-sharing service provider Jump Bikes

Uber is diversifying with the purchase of an electric bike rental startup Jump, the two companies announced Monday.

Being focused on championing smart technology for smart cities, Uber today helps "tens of millions of people get a ride at the tap of a button", said Khosrowshahi. Presumably customers who do not secure the bikes properly will suffer a penalty sufficient to prevent such bad behavior.

But the red tape that came with building bike stations hampered efforts in other cities. Making the decision to integrate the bike-sharing platform permanently after the pilot concluded was apparently an easy one. China's two largest bike-sharing operators, Mobike and Ofo, both began services in US cities previous year. The agreement with San Francisco is good through 2025, and the contract with New York City is good through 2029.

The bike share schemes users can locate and unlock bicycles through their smartphones.

One downside of Motivate's sharing service is that you can only park its bikes at designated docks. It has earlier raised $11.6 million funding to date.

Uber had fought criminal proceedings in several courts in France based on a 2014 French law before dropping in 2015 its UberPop service linking customers with non-professional drivers using their own vehicles.

First off, the bikes are electric bikes (or e-bikes). Jump also operates fleets in Washington D.C. and Sacramento, California. The battery-powered e-bikes became available for use through both Jump's app and Uber's. Once they lose charge, users will have to be in decent enough shape to handle a 210 pound bike manually.

Now, the European Commission recently dealt a huge blow to Uber's argument by ruling that it's a transportation, not a digital service company. Pedal-assist bikes will now be allowed, but more powerful e-bikes that can reach speeds over 20 miles per hour will still be forbidden.

The service may also raise privacy concerns.
