The National Partnership for Women and Families released a new study of the gender pay gap in each state for National Equal Pay Day.

Human Resources Commissioner Soo Choi applauded the mayor for "taking the lead on addressing the gender wage gap issue" still holding women back, even as they enter the workforce in greater numbers.

Only in two occupational categories - "dining room and cafeteria attendants and bartender helpers" and "wholesale and retail buyers, except farm products" - do women earn more than men, while in 107 occupations women earn less than 95 percent of their male counterparts, the report found.

"It's very important that we continue to raise the awareness to make sure people are educated and informed and most of all that women know how to advocate for themselves", she said.

Exactly how much less than men women are paid depends on where you are.

Do you struggle with the gender wage gap?

This new analysis uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau, and finds that California has the second smallest cents-on-the-dollar gap in the nation. Knowing what coworkers earn would make getting equal pay easier and prevent employer retaliation. That's why there's an Asian Women's Equal Pay Day on February 22.

According to Crooms-Robinson changing corporate thinking is one of the keys to ensuring Equal Pay Day and the wage gape become things of the past.

Equal Pay Day was recognized across the country Tuesday. In sales, for example, women make only 62 cents for every dollar paid to men. Sandberg's company and its campaign partners will host the same initiative on Black Women's Equal Pay Day on August 7 and Latina Equal Pay Day on November 1 - female demographics that face pay gaps of 38 percent and 46 percent, respectively. And parenthood further complicates the issue: The wage gap for mothers is around 71¢ for every dollar paid to fathers. On average, these companies offer women 4% less than men for the same role, with some offering women up to 45% less. Women and men both pay penalties for working in predominantly female occupations, butin general, men across skill-level and occupation earn higher median hourly wages than women in the same occupation. Many women, she noted, offer primary care for children, for parents or other family members.

The Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank and Toronto-Dominion said the mean hourly rate for their United Kingdom -based female workers was between 35 and 44 per cent lower than men's rate.
