UFC 223: Max Holloway steps in to face Nurmagomedov after Ferguson injury

Tony Ferguson believes the UFC have acted unfairly in stripping him of the interim lightweight title after he pulled out of his clash with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Max Holloway shared on his last MMA Hour appearance, March 19, that he was still dealing with the ankle injury that kept him out of UFC 222. The result of an MRI showed a torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL), which will require surgery, and Ferguson was not cleared to compete.

Now, with the news that the UFC's fourth attempt ended in another injury withdrawal, fans are beginning to wonder if the Ferguson-Nurmagomedov match-up is cursed. "They just did that with Robert Whittaker previous year".

And upon hearing that Ferguson was withdrawing through injury from his lightweight title fight with Nurmagomedov at UFC 233 in Brooklyn, McGregor took aim on Twitter.

We're getting some UFC 196 vibes with UFC 223 this week. All I can say is Max is a gangster. "It's gonna be a great night", Max told KHON's Rob DeMello.

Overwatch teasing new Uprising event for April
The event will run from April 10 through 30, and pit you and three friends up against omnics running rampant through London. It looks like it'll be Blackwatch's turn to take center stage, in an event that takes place before last year's Uprising.

Check back later in the week for bonus episodes on location from Brooklyn, including interviews with numerous fighters competing at UFC 223.

For Holloway, with a win, he'd be the second fighter in UFC history to hold two titles simultaneously and the first since McGregor did so back in 2016. Nurmagomedov said. "I need eight weeks, train hard, last one week make weight and go to the war".

"I think about Georges St-Pierre because he talk about he can make 155", Nurmagomedov said.

But Moicano has faced the more established competition to date and if he's able to halt the MA native's lengthy run of success, don't be surprised if it's the Brazilian who already boasts a win over the fifth-ranked Stephens that puts himself in the title conversation coming out of UFC 223. In a way, the fight gained more drama than it would have if the original matchup stood. "It was April first so just like you guys, I thought it was an April Fool's joke". Do you think the fight will happen in future or is the bout cursed?
