In that interview, van der Zwaan lied about when he was last in contact with Gates and someone in Ukraine that prosecutors called "Person A".

Mueller also argued that Manafort does not have the right to determine the validity or scope of his appointment.

While van der Zwaan has no direct ties to the Trump campaign, he allegedly had discussions during the campaign with Gates and an unnamed associate who was a former Russian intelligence officer.

Manafort's defense is predicated on the claim that Mueller overstepped his mandate by charging Manafort with crimes not specifically related to the collusion inquiry.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation just placed its first person behind bars. "He thereafter deliberately and repeatedly lied", Mueller's office wrote. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is seeking to have the case against him dismissed.

Mueller and his team questioned van der Zwaan because he and his law firm wrote a report for a pro-Russian government in Ukraine back in 2012.

The regulations "unequivocally state" that they are not meant to "create any [enforceable] rights" in a criminal proceeding, the special counsel continued. They also noted that Rosenstein has said publicly that he is supervising the investigation closely and that he does not believe Mueller has exceeded his authority.

He looked the judge in the eye and said, "What I did was wrong". "I'm appropriately exercising my oversight responsibilities".
