Suspect Austin Rollins' two alleged victims - a 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl - were shot in a Great Mills High School hallway just before classes began, authorities said, adding that Rollins, 17, died after exchanging gunfire with a school resource officer. "We still have somebody in critical condition".

"Great Mills is a wonderful school and somewhere I am proud to go".

"He pursued the shooter, engaged the shooter during which that engagement, he fired a round at the shooter".

A 19-year-old man gunned down students and staff with a rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, slaughtering at least 17 unsuspecting students and adults. But it could have dragged on longer and proven deadlier were it not for the rapid response of a school resource officer. The 16-year-old girl was stabilized and transferred to University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center, where she remains in critical condition.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan praised the officer's actions, but said legislation is needed to curb the availability of guns from certain people, including those with a mental illness. A 14-year-old male was also struck.

Shots were fired inside a Maryland school Tuesday and the school was put on lockdown.

"It happened really quickly, right after school started", Jonathan Freese, a Great Mills student, told CNN. It wasn't immediately clear whether Rollins shot himself or was shot by the school resource officer.

"Today, I will be with the students, teachers, parents, and first responders in Great Mills".

Cameron initially said the 14-year-old student was shot by Rollins, but he later indicated that the exact circumstances were still unclear. It also includes another $50 million annually to pay for school resource officers, counselors and technology.

"When the shooting took place, our school resource officer, who was stationed inside the school, was alerted to the event and the shots being fired".

The principal at the Maryland high school where there was a shooting Tuesday morning told parents last month that the school had investigated threats of a possible shooting and found they were "not substantiated".

"It is an exceptionally tragic day", said James Scott Smith, the superintendent of St. Mary's County schools. But Cameron credited the officer with preventing any more loss of life. "You never think it'll be your school and then it is", Davis said.

Cameron said Rollins pulled out a semiautomatic Glock handgun in the hallway as classes were getting underway at 7:55 a.m.at the school of 1,600. Jaelynn is an awesome young lady, whose peaceful presence and love of her fellow students and family is known throughout her Maryland-based school.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says three people have been injured in a shooting at a high school in southern Maryland, including the shooter.

Since the Parkland shooting, many districts around the country have seen a spike in threats made against schools.

"All my daughter said is she was hiding", a father said as law officers and rescue crews continued their response. Gaskill is also a member of the local SWAT team and joined the sheriff's office six years ago. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives helped conduct an urgent trace for the gun, but how Rollins got his hands on it is still under investigation. "If we see something that makes us feel unsure or uncomfortable, we will say something". But that is unlikely to be the case until Congress takes meaningful action.
