Pikeville Officer Scotty Hamilton and Kentucky State Trooper Matt Martin were conducting a criminal patrol near Hurricane Creek Tuesday night when they encountered a suspicious vehicle, according to a statement released by the Kentucky State Police. The trooper, who had separated from Hamilton, found Hamilton dead.

A manhunt ensued to find the suspect, with officers using drones in Pike County and helicopters in Floyd County to help search. "Officer Hamilton leaves behind a wife, a young daughter, and a community that is safer for his service".

Police have arrested a man wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of a Kentucky police officer.

Dozens gathered along Hambley Boulevard in downtown Pikeville to watch and pay their respects Wednesday afternoon as Hamilton's body was transported to the J.W. Call Funeral Home. Hamilton's casket was draped with an American flag and led down Hambley Boulevard in a processional ceremony Wednesday.

Hamilton's funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m., also at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
