Accompanied on his visit by other United States diplomats and security officials, the foreign ministry statement said Kushner will also meet Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray.

Pena Nieto was originally scheduled to meet Trump at the White House, but the plans were scrapped after the two leaders had a contentious telephone call over a border wall, CBS News reported.

On Monday, Trump reiterated that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was bad for the United States, accusing Mexico of doing enough to stop drugs making its way across the USA border.

The Mexican foreign ministry announced Kushner's trip in a statement late on Tuesday.

The NAFTA renegotiation process, uncertainty about legislation relating to young US immigrants known as dreamers and Trump's tendency to use Twitter to voice his opinion on contentious bilateral issues such as drug trafficking have further strained the relationship between Mexico and the U.S.

Security clearance has been a significant issue in recent weeks, ever since Rob Porter's departure from the White House over multiple allegations of domestic abuse.

Pena Nieto has flatly refused, and repeated his refusal when Trump pressed him during the call to stop saying that Mexico wouldn't pay.

What it instead ended up being was a tiresome , dour and boring encounter where one team was not ready to play football . Guardiola's side is showing no mercy on its way to a second trophy of the season, after the League Cup last weekend.

Some analysts in Mexico view the visit as a chance to fix a key relationship and for Kushner, 37, to prove his value to the White House. Despite this, however, the president still sent Kushner to meet with Mexican officials as a diplomatic envoy on Wednesday.

Mexican officials declined to comment on whether Trump and Pena Nieto will hold court in the future.

Kushner's status as a top adviser to the president and his access to sensitive intelligence raised questions previous year when it emerged that he had to amend his security clearance form several times, at one point to add more than 100 names to a list of his foreign contacts, since first applying.
