He added, "I am so proud to be at the beginning of a movement where the best films in every genre are being bought by my fellow black directors".

McDormand's win was expected, as was Gary Oldman's (Darkest Hour) for best actor.

"I instantly realised that an award like this is much bigger than me".

He gave credit for his own win to his "scrappy crew" filled with "people who I shouldn't have been able to afford". "Like, I know that I can get it made, so let's move forward with that goal in mind, instead of it being this ongoing project that who knows if anyone will ever see it". "It's very special and I think that goes for all areas of inclusion".

Before Get Out, he was best known as one half of the Comedy Central duo "Key and Peele" alongside Keegan-Michael Key, with whom he produced the 2016 comedy Keanu.

The day before Oscars 2018, Get Out won big at the Independent Spirit Awards with the film winning Best Feature and Jordan Peele picking up Best Director.

He cited Whoopi Goldberg's 1991 speech for her best supporting actress Oscar win for Ghost as being "a huge inspiration to me".

Get Out began the evening with four nominations, including one for best picture.

Guillermo del Toro, victor of the award for best director for "The Shape of Water" celebrates in the audience at the Oscars, March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

"The reason for the visceral response to this movie being called a comedy is that we are still living in a time in which African American cries for justice aren't being taken seriously", Peele said.

"I said that Jordan deserves it, Jordan deserves it", Kaluuya said, recalling the conversation.

Other black writers have won in the past for Best Adapted Screenplay, including Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney last year for Moonlight and John Ridley in 2013 for 12 Years a Slave, but never for an original screenplay.

Although its no laughing matter, Jordan Peele said his movie's message is as real as it gets.
