MI overcomes shooting woes to beat Iowa

Each team shot just 56 percent from the foul line.

Duncan Robinson made Michigan's only field goal in overtime, a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:15 left, and the 15th-ranked Wolverines survived foul trouble and poor shooting to beat Iowa 77-71 and advance to the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

But in the end, fifth-seeded MI found a way to survive and push past No. 12 Iowa, 77-71, in a whistle-filled, second-round game Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

"Our youth has shown throughout the year and I think that once we get better collectively and come together as a unit and hone in on that stuff, I think the sky is the limit for this new coaching staff", Nichols said. "The foul shots didn't go in". "I think that was one of the first teams that really started switching ball screens".

Penn State is 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 neutral site games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall while the over is 11-5 in their last 16 conference matchups. The rest of the Wolverines went 0 for 13.

MI forced enough misses and got some timely baskets - including Duncan Robinson's 3 that put U-M ahead for good - to get the victory. "They were just better than us".

After getting out to a quick 2-point lead in the extra period, the Hawkeyes were outscored 10-2 to finalize the heartbreaking defeat.

MI was up 67-61, but did not score over the final two minutes of regulation, allowing Iowa to tie it and send the game to overtime. "They've got veteran guys", Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. But the Hawkeyes succeeded in getting MI into significant foul trouble (Moritz Wagner, Abdur-Rahkman fouled out).

But they'll have to find a way to slow MI guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur Rahkman, who torched the Hawkeyes twice for team-high 18 and 15 points in two Wolverines victories, 75-68 at Iowa on January 2 and 74-59 at home on February 14.

The Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command investigated the letter containing white powder after it was sent to St. A day later police revealed a similar package containing white powder had been sent to the Houses of Parliament.

With senior guard Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman out of the game due to fouls, it was up to Robinson to handle the clutch shots at the finish that typically don't always go to him.

Today, however, went much differently from those two regular season games.

Tyler Cook and Garza scored 13 points apiece for Iowa.

Charles Matthews, who finished with a team-high 16 points, drained a deep 2-point jumper with 2:09 left in regulation to give MI a 67-61 advantage. When they both went out, MI led 28-24. The Wolverines' only other 3-pointer was the one by Robinson in overtime. Wagner leads in rebounds with 7.2 while Zavier Simpson tops in assists with 3.6 per game.

"This is my first time being here", said Bohannon, the 6-foot sophomore from Marion, Iowa.

The Big Ten opened a five-day run at the "Mecca of Basketball" with Jordan Bohannon leading Iowa past IL 96-87 on Wednesday night. Wagner shook his defender at the baseline and dunked through contact, making the free throw to convert the 3-point play. "Someone do the stat, probably just a couple of games".

MI cruised through the 2017 Big Ten Tournament as a No. 8 seed en route to the title. No one was seriously hurt, but it was a harrowing experience.

Robinson failed to score in 11 minutes in that game. It took the Hawkeyes (-3.5) in their 77-70 win over Northwestern on Saturday, and Iowa (+1) in its 96-87 victory over IL in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.
