The Washington Post reported on Friday that Sorensen's former wife claimed he was violent and emotionally abusive during their two-and-a-half-year marriage, accusations that he denied, saying that she had in fact victimized him.

A White House official said staffers felt misled about how Mr Porter downplayed the allegations, both to Mr Kelly and Mr McGahn.

According to theNew York Post, Gen. Kelly told Mr Trump that he would resign after the president thought his shifting statements on Mr Porter made the White House look bad, ABC News reported, citing sources.

Corbett told the Post that Sorensen committed several violent and threatening actions during their marriage, such as running a vehicle over her foot, tamping out a cigarette on her hand, throwing her against a wall, and grabbing her "menacingly" by the hair "while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine's coast".

In a text message to The Post, Sorensen said he stepped down because he "didn't want the White House to have to deal with this distraction".

Sorensen insisted he had "never committed violence of any kind against any woman in my entire life".

Mr Sorensen alleged that Ms Corbett punched him multiple times and once grabbed the steering wheel while he was driving on a highway.

His departure comes just days after another Trump official, Rob Porter, quit over allegations of abuse from two ex-wives, something he denies.

'He did a very good job when he was in the White House and we hope he has a wonderful career, and hopefully he will have a great career ahead of him'.

Trump is also stressing that Porter maintains he is innocent. I stand by my previous comments of the Rob Porter that I have come to know since becoming Chief of Staff, and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation.

Although she didn't file a police report, Corbett told WaPo that she spoke with the FBI in October about Sorensen's abusive behavior last fall as he underwent a background check by the bureau.

The eldest Trump daughter, who serves as an adviser to the President, also issued a defense of her former employee.

"I was appalled when I learned of the allegations against Rob Porter". Sorensen denied the claims and even said it was he who was the victim.

When asked about Porter's resignation, Trump heaped praise on the former aide saying he "worked very hard" and "we wish him well".

Hicks is one of the President's longest-serving White House confidantes, lasting through numerous campaign and White House shakeups. "It's an obviously tough time for him". In a written statement sent through the White House press office Wednesday, Porter said he took those photos, but that "the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described", he said.

Porter resigned under pressure Wednesday after his two ex-wives alleged that he beat them.
