The incident began around 7 p.m. Wednesday as an officer was checking on a report of a man screaming at an apartment complex.

At a press conference Thursday morning, Richardson Police Chief James Spivey said the Plano Police Department will be taking over the investigation.

The alleged gunman was taken into police custody after surrendering just before midnight following an hours long standoff with swat officers.

Sherrard was taken to Medical City Plano where he later died from his injuries.

After allegedly shooting the officer, McCall barricaded himself inside one of the apartments for more than four hours.

Sources tell CBS 11 News the fallen officer was married with two young children. "It is an emotionally trying, traumatic day, but they're out there doing the things they do best serving this community". It's unsure what led to the deadly argument. They said the man found by officers at the scene has died.

The officer who lost his life is the first Richardson police officer to be killed in the line of duty since the department was first organized in 1955.

"And may his legacy live on in others' service", Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote on Twitter.

A GoFundMe page was set up Thursday morning to help cover funeral expenses for Rene Gamez.

Funeral arrangements for Officer Sherrard have been scheduled for Tuesday.
