Police investigating the shooting of students at Sal Castro Middle School said the handgun that was carried into a classroom appears to have fired a single round from inside a backpack.

The 12-year-old girl arrested for the incident at Sal Castro Middle School is being charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.

A 15-year-old boy who was shot in the head was in critical condition, and a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the arm was listed as stable, Los Angeles police said late Thursday.

A spokesman at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center where the children were being treated didn't respond to messages about his condition Friday, though a doctor treating the boy said he expected him to make a full recovery.

Three others - a 30-year-old female staff member at the school and two other students, an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl - suffered superficial face and head injuries, police said. "I think he will do fine", Strumwasser said.

"She doesn't do bad things, she just stays quiet", he added. She had been in Calabasas when she heard about the shooting, describing it as a "dramatic day". He told AP that the 12-year-old girl, his classmate, told him it was an accident, saying, "I didn't mean to".

A total of 14 shootings have occurred on school campuses across the United States in 2018 as of Thursday, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization committed to measuring US gun violence with comprehensive and up-to-date data. The school has been declared safe, and we are communicating with parents of students at Castro Middle School, as well as neighboring campuses.

"I'm anxious about the kids who got shot", he said.

Maria Serrano reluctantly dropped off her 12-year-old daughter at school.

"I don't know. Mom go home, I will tell you when we are not in lockdown". "I didn't think something like this would happen here".

The girl, who was taken into custody minutes after the shooting, has retained an attorney and isn't answering questions, Rubenstein said.

The shooting was in the Westlake District, a heavily populated area just northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The district began requiring the daily searches with metal-detecting wands in 2011 after two students were injured in a shooting at Gardena High School, district officials said. "Someone chose to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it", admits Benjamin (who's real name is hidden at the request of his guardians), a seventh-grader attending the Sal Castro Middle School.
