Chinese smartphone-maker Vivo demoed in-display fingerprint sensor on a mobile at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas on January 9. The company has been toying with in-screen fingerprint sensors for a while now.

With the in-built fingerprint sensor technology, the smartphone will become a bezel-less phone and the display of the phone will be able to read the fingerprints.

It will be interesting to see how the new biometric scanning technology will affect the smartphone usage and the industry trends. This smartphone is ready for production, and it should be announced in early 2018. These fingerprint sensors can be embedded inside the display and will be scratch-proof as well waterproof.

Based on Vivo's press statement, the fingerprint scanner is placed between the OLED and glass panel covering the display. The phone is also said to sport iPhone X-esque notch on the top. When fingerprint recognition is not required, the fingerprint user interface will be invisible and will not disrupt the overall visual experience.

The projector has received the coveted CES 2018 Best of Innovation award and is being featured at the tech show next week. While they are "heavy, expensive, and hard to install", according to the company, the HU80KA is the opposite of all these.

CES 2018 is in full swing and is giving us a chance to witness the next generation technology products. The only difference I experienced was that the Vivo handset was slower - both to learn the contours of my fingerprint and to unlock once I put my thumb on the on-screen fingerprint prompt - but not so much as to be problematic.

"With our efforts in extensive consumer research and long-term R&D investment, Vivo is well positioned to pioneer the development of fingerprint scanning technology". The latest fingerprint scanning technology will enable users to unlock their smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display. Meanwhile, a couple of days ago, an upcoming DOOGEE smartphone was leaked which was said to become the first device to achieve the technology.

"Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience".
