COPS have collared a man in possession of a small arsenal of guns at a high-rise hotel where a major New Year's celebration is planned, in Houston, Texas. Officers arrived on the scene and shortly after found several weapons and ammunition in his hotel room.

The 49-year-old was arrested for assaulting a peace officer and trespassing, according to the police.

The hotel's annual party Sunday night is one of the city's largest New Year's Eve celebrations.

A hotel spokesperson told the website the party will go ahead as planned but with extra security. He was arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing. Houston Police responded to the call from Hyatt hotel staff about a drunk man at the hotel bar early Sunday morning before discovering the weapons in a hotel room search. He said his truck was parked in the hotel garage. When investigators looked into his room further, they located an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and lots of ammunition, Macintosh said.

Shedding light on the winter solstice
If you don't like the cold, here's a silver lining: Whatever the rest of winter brings, daylight is once again on the upswing. Dr O'Kelly is believed to have been the first human to witness the winter solstice from inside Newgrange in millennia.

Highest will be around Times Square in NY, where police said they would deploy rooftop observers and counter-snipers in more buildings than usual, as well as patrolling hotels. The man was taken to jail to await questioning.

Police are waiting to interview the man until he has sobered up, Macintosh said.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted that the situation was "contained" and authorities are not aware of any threats to the city.
