Cyclone Ockhi: Maha, Guj on high alert; Kerala toll at 25

Amid the heat of the Gujarat polls, cyclone Ockhi, eddying menacingly towards the state's coast, poured cold water on the campaigning today, forcing cancellation of rallies of several top leaders, including those by BJP chief Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places in Saurashtra and south Gujarat.

The BJP also called off rallies and press conferences of Yogi Adityanath and Vasundhara Raje, chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, respectively, which were scheduled to be held in Surat.

Rains driven by Cyclone Ochki lashed most parts of coastal Konkan in Maharashtra, including Mumbai on Tuesday.

"Our karyakartas (workers) should devote themselves to providing all possible assistance and stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow citizens", he said on Twitter.

Referring to the Uttar Pradesh civic poll results, the BJP leader said, "The BJP won majority civic body polls in Uttar Pradesh". The elections were married by thousands of voters complaining of their names having gone missing from the voters' list.

Cyclone Ochki has claimed lives of 39 people from the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

A total of 556 fishermen were also rescued by relief and rescue teams from seas.

"Heavy rainfall is likely at a few places with squally wind speed reaching 50 to 60 kms per hour gusting to 70 kms per hour very likely along coastal area in next 24 hours", the IMD said in its report. The Navy has deployed 10 naval ships and eight aircraft, round the clock service late last night for the ongoing rescue operations.
