The gunman who killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more at a country music festival here last week shot a hotel security guard before, not after, opening fire on concertgoers hundreds of yards away, the authorities said Monday, a significant shift in their timeline. However, Lombardo said that investigators have since learned that Campos "was encountered by the suspect prior to his shooting to the outside world".

McKendry was parked in front of the Mandalay Bay hotel Sunday night when Paddock started shooting from his 32nd-floor room. He opened fire through the door, wounding the guard, leading Campos to alert the police. Authorities do not yet know what made him stop shooting, Lombardo said.

Paddock shot the guard at 9.59pm local time, Lombardo said, shortly before raining down bullets on the Route 91 Harvest festival in an attack that began at 10.05pm and lasted 10 minutes.

According to Lombardo, there has been no evidence that the shooter had a link to any terrorist organizations or ideologies.

Charles "Sid" Heal, a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's commander and tactical expert, said the new timeline "changes the whole perspective of the shooting".

Workers board up a broken window at the Mandalay Bay hotel, where shooter Stephen Paddock conducted his mass shooting along the Las Vegas Strip, in Las Vegas on October 6, 2017.

"As I said from day one, we want to figure out the why to this and we'd like to know the motive".

Paddock had shot himself and died before police stormed the room.

"He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something frightful like this was going to happen", she said in a statement.

Lombardo again expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation, but not with the investigators who have yet to pinpoint the motive behind the shooter's decision to fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino on a Las Vegas Strip concert crowd of 22,000 on October 1.

It draws into question the timeline of events and the speed of the police response.

Lombardo said Paddock was drilling a wall near a doorway but didn't finish.

Sherriff Lombardo has said previously it is possible that Paddock had planned to escape.

Lombardo said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is still evaluating Paddock's mental state.

Thomas Fadden, who survived what was the deadliest shooting in recent USA history, said it was scary "not to know who your neighbor could be".

Crawford said she had an emotional breakdown after the massacre, adding that she feels "guilty" for having known Paddock.

The sheriff also said investigators do not believe that a single event pushed him to do what he did.

Lombardo declined to reveal what they've said, but he stated, "Every piece of information we get is one more piece of the puzzle".
