Israel, which annexed East Jerusalem after the 1967 Six Day War, and does not regard construction there as part of the settlement enterprise, has never claimed sovereignty in the West Bank.

The attacker had "arrived at the rear gate of Har Adar along with Palestinian labourers entering the settlement" before opening fire on Israeli police guards, police said.

Friedman's statements come as the Trump administration has been looking to restart negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians. According to long-held U.S. policy comporting with worldwide law, all territory captured by Israel from Jordan in 1967 is occupied territory, under dispute, the permanent status of which will be determined in negotiations between Israel and the PLO, serving as representative of the Palestinian people.

David Friedman's comments were met with anger and ridicule, as Palestinians remain at odds with decades of United States policy in the Middle East.

Elsewhere, Israeli soldiers abducted, on Thursday at dawn, several Palestinians during invasions and searches of homes in the occupied West Bank, and clashed with many youngsters near Jerusalem.

"I think that was always the expectation when [UN] resolution 242 was adopted in 1967", he said.

"Then we have Friedman's repetition of the canard, a common talking point of settler apologists, that Israel occupies only 2% of the West Bank".

"The idea was that Israel would be entitled to secure borders", he added.

Friedman referred to the "important nationalistic, historical, and religious significance" of these communities, commenting, "I think the settlers view themselves as Israelis, and Israel views the settlers as Israelis". "Israel is internationally recognised as the occupying power over 100 percent of Palestine, including in and around occupied east Jerusalem", Erekat said. Israel has done. I mean, they're only occupying 2 percent of the West Bank.

"We'll try to get it done right, not done fast", Friedman added. Israel's own Supreme Court regards the territory as being held under 'belligerent occupation, ' as defined by global law. But as Friedman must know, Israel's control of the West Bank - geographically, topographically, politically, economically, and in any other way imaginable - can not be dwarfed into his two-percent figure.
