Virginia State Police make a big change to trooper hiring process

Over Labor Day Weekend 2016, the State Police made 220 DWI arrests and issued more than 11,000 tickets.

The Labor Day Weekend is just about here, and the State of NY wants to make sure you stay safe while you're out enjoying the holiday. In 17 of those crashes, injuries were reported to police as of Sunday morning. The enforcement period started on August 18, and runs through Monday, September 4, 2017. Drivers are reminded to act responsibly as they enjoy the holiday.

Since the holiday weekend is marked by increased travel and alcohol consumption, law enforcement officials across the country have chosen to participate in the campaign.

The State Police goal is to maximize DWI enforcement efforts to ensure motorists are not needlessly injured or killed by an intoxicated or drug impaired drivers during this time.

Troopers set up sobriety checkpoints as well as DUI patrols around CT. The statewide efforts focus on men aged 21 to 35, who accounted for almost one-third of those killed in alcohol-related crashes in the state a year ago. In addition to more troopers being out on the roads, more than 150 local enforcement agencies will have extra patrols.

Penalties for driving under the influence include mandatory ignition interlock installation on vehicle, fines up to $2,500, license suspension up to one year, and jail sentences also up to one year, the governor's office said.
