The US is staring down the costliest natural disaster in US history, as shelters for companion animals and livestock have been set up around Texas to harbor and care for displaced pets and farm animals following Hurricane Harvey.

Jenna Pringle, marketing and communications director with Seattle Humane, told KIRO Radio's Ron and Don Show that they rescued at least 35 dogs on Wednesday, but are prepared to bring in many more.

"We just want to help out", she said, adding she expected to start receiving donations Wednesday afternoon and they would be stored in the shelter's sally port.

To prepare for the dog's arrival, St. Hubert's is mobilizing its Sister Shelter WayStation Program which moves and transports various breeds and sizes of dogs up and down the east coast, placing animals in targeted adoption areas. "That was a hard aspect during Katrina is that family members were forced to make this heart wrenching decision to evacuate without a family member, a beloved pet".

Karen Remy O'Toole experienced the trauma of rescuing pets after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Authorities had to include pets in federal guidelines for disaster planning, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

On Monday morning pets were welcomed in a designated area at the facility, where dogs nestled next to owners on cots.

It has been reported that hundreds of cats and dogs have safely made it to the open arms and hearts of no-kill shelters in New Jersey, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana.

"We've all been watching the disaster and wanting to help any way we can". If you see a post begging for help rescuing a specific animal spotted in the floods, share it! Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and cause a pet to become confused or lost.

"Give them treats and toys to make the crate a very special place to get into", she said. "My husband doesn't know that yet I'm already making plans", Opsahl said.

"Please do not keep your family members tied to a rope or chain", the police department in Montgomery County said on Facebook.
