Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

Five innocent people were shot in the attack, including House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise. James Hodgkinson, who was 66, died of gunshot wounds suffered in a shootout with police.

Hodgkinson says her husband prepared for his trip to Washington by selling everything he owned from his home-inspection business. When asked what she wanted to say to the families of the injured, she said she "didn't know who was shot".

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", said a statement from the former Democratic presidential hopeful. "I can't wrap my head around it", Hodgkinson said.

"I just want you to all go away and leave my neighbors in peace", she said. "She was really unhappy there", Moreland added.

Sue Hodgkinson said her husband left the couple's home in March to move to Washington, shortly after their adopted daughter moved back into the house with her two-year-old son.

The couple had been married for 30 years, she said, and he'd sold nearly everything from his business before moving out to D.C.in March.

Schaumleffel never actually knew Hodgkinson said now he'd never forget the day he was out there shooting.

Two of Hodgkinson's victims were severely wounded.

As for Scalise, he's still in critical condition, but he's improving. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way. Hodgkinson was mortally wounded by police. A former congressional aide was hospitalized.

Scalise, as the third-ranking member of the U.S. House of Representatives, had a capitol police detail with him at the practice.

"The. ways they could do that is you've ever been treated by a mental physician or in a mental hospital, or you've been convicted of a felony, or have been convicted of domestic battery", said Wagner.

Wagner said there was no way to predict that Hodgkinson would take such violent action.

The FBI said the shooter's white van has been processed. They've also found a cell phone, a computer and camera in a white van that the Federal Bureau of Investigation says he was living in in Alexandria since March.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., and Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., had left the field early and actually crossed paths with the shooter in the parking lot.
