Bieber beat Adele's Hello for the Best Song award for hit single Sorry.

British female group Little Mix took home the best United Kingdom and Ireland act award, beating Adele, Coldplay, Years And Years and former One Direction member Zayn Malik.

Neither Bieber or Lady Gaga were in Rotterdam to receive their awards. "You guys are outstanding", said Mendes, while collecting the award.

In a video message Gaga thanked her fans for their votes, explained she was promoting her new album Joanne in the US and that she had recently toned down her style to complement the record's focus on her family life.

Bieber and Gaga were among the winners of the night who failed to attend the ceremony.

Another early victor was Nigerian hip hop sensation, Wizkid, real name Ayo Balogun, who was named as Best African Act.

They had been nominated in the Best Live category but were edged out by rising USA stars Twenty One Pilots, who also won in the Best Alternative category.

OneRepublic performed "Let's Hurt Tonight" while rain poured down on the stage, drenching the band.

The ceremony in Rotterdam paid tribute to Prince with purple trophies.
